eSIM vs physical SIM: choose for your trip

An eSIM downloads a SIM profile; a physical SIM uses a removable card. Choose the format your exact phone supports, then compare the actual plan’s coverage, allowance, validity and included services. The format alone does not establish better signal, faster data or an included phone number.

Short answers

Is an eSIM better than a physical SIM for travel?

An eSIM can suit a compatible, unlocked phone when you want to download a travel plan without obtaining a card. A physical SIM can suit a device or service that requires one. Check the phone, setup method and plan conditions before choosing either format.

Can I keep my physical SIM and add a travel eSIM?

Some devices support a physical SIM and an eSIM together; others support different combinations. Confirm the exact model, region and carrier conditions. Select the intended mobile-data line and check the home line’s roaming charges separately.

Does an eSIM include calls and SMS?

Only when the selected plan provides them. Data-only, call and SMS entitlements are plan features rather than consequences of the SIM format. A separate web-managed SMS-number purchase does not add those features to the travel eSIM.

Does Portproof sell physical SIM cards?

Portproof’s travel catalogue contains downloadable eSIM products, with plan-specific coverage and features. It does not ship physical SIM cards. Check the current eSIM listing and availability before purchasing.

Compare the format and the service separately

Start with the job the plan must do: data during a trip, a reachable home number, or calls and carrier texts. Then check whether your phone can use the required format. An installed profile or inserted card is one part of that setup; the paid service still needs the right destination, active term and included features.

Check your phone’s eSIM compatibility before buying. Portproof supplies eSIM plans, so a device that only accepts a physical SIM needs a different product source. A carrier-locked phone is not made compatible with another carrier simply by changing the SIM format.

Choose from the trip you are actually taking

Use the measured eSIM data planner if you have a representative usage sample. Compare its estimate with the plan’s allowance and trip length. A larger allowance does not resolve a missing destination or a validity period that starts too early.

For cross-border journeys, use the multi-country eSIM checklist. Destination guides such as France and Morocco explain coverage differences found in the reviewed listings; they do not establish service at every address.

Keep the data line and the home number distinct

On a supported dual-SIM phone, identify which line should supply mobile data and which number should receive calls or texts. Apple documents physical-SIM plus eSIM use on supported travel configurations. Google documents Pixel combinations and separate defaults. Exact model, purchase region and carrier conditions matter; a general model-family name is insufficient.

  1. Confirm the phone’s supported SIM combination and lock state.
  2. Label the lines clearly enough to recognise the travel plan and the home plan.
  3. Select the intended mobile-data line using the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Check the home carrier’s roaming and messaging charges before leaving that line enabled.
  5. Review any automatic data-switching option before relying on the travel line for data.

Internet messaging, carrier SMS and a web-managed number are different services. Read data-only eSIMs and SMS before relying on texts. If you need a separately purchased receiving-number service, check the SMS catalogue, its permitted use and its access term.

Check when the travel plan starts

The current eSIM catalogue includes different activation triggers. A plan can start on installation, first data use or connection to a network, according to its stated policy. Do not copy another plan’s timing advice. Check the selected listing before downloading or enabling the profile.

Use a working internet connection and the delivered setup information. Follow the QR or manual installation guide for device setup. Keep installation secrets private, and do not delete a profile on the assumption it can be downloaded again.

Top-up support is also plan-specific. A compatible eSIM phone does not establish that the bought plan can be extended. Check top-up eligibility and recovery before relying on more data later.

Compare the live plan before paying

  • Coverage: every destination where you require data.
  • Allowance and validity: enough for the task and the actual access period.
  • Activation: the event that starts that specific plan.
  • Capabilities: reported calls, SMS, hotspot and top-up conditions separately.
  • Availability: the current listing and purchase control, rather than an old price or screenshot.

Open the eSIM catalogue to compare current plans. An unavailable listing can still be reviewed, but it cannot currently be purchased. For an existing order, use My eSIMs and resolve its saved status before buying again.

Sources and scope

Manufacturer references checked 23 October 2026: Apple travel eSIM guidance and Google Pixel dual-SIM guidance. These support the device and line-selection checks, not a speed comparison. Product conditions come from Portproof’s current plan fields; no handset or network benchmark is claimed.

What is not allowed

Use only plans and accounts you are authorised to manage. Keep installation information private and follow the acceptable-use policy.
