Short answers
Does a country eSIM include data at sea?
Do not assume that it does. A country in the covered-destination list does not establish access to a ship’s onboard cellular network. Look for explicit supported-network terms. Portproof’s destination listings are not a promise of maritime or satellite connectivity.
Can I use a travel eSIM during a port visit?
Check whether the plan covers that country and an available land network, then check its allowance, validity and activation rules. A scheduled port stop does not guarantee reception at a particular berth or inside the ship. Keep an alternative for essential information.
Is ship Wi-Fi the same as an eSIM connection?
No. Wi-Fi is a separate connection selected on your device and provided under its own access conditions. A ship’s Wi-Fi package is not included merely because you purchased an eSIM. Check the operator’s current package and supported uses.
Will disabling data roaming prevent every charge?
A data setting alone is not a universal block on calls or other chargeable cellular activity. Review each active line and your device’s current controls. If using only ship Wi-Fi, check the device instructions for keeping cellular connections off while enabling Wi-Fi.
Separate three connections before choosing a plan
Cruise searches often lead to products specifically sold for onboard networks. That is a different offer from ordinary destination data. Before comparing prices, write down whether you need a land-based mobile connection, the ship’s cellular service or its Wi-Fi. A package suitable for one does not automatically supply the others.
| Connection | Evidence to obtain | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Land-based cellular during a port visit | Covered country, supported land network, available signal and the selected plan’s terms | That every place on the ship or port will have reception |
| Shipboard cellular while sailing | Explicit onboard-network coverage and charging terms from the relevant provider | That a nearby country name includes its surrounding sea route |
| Ship Wi-Fi | The operator’s package, access instructions and supported activities | That buying mobile data also pays for Wi-Fi access |
Ofcom explains that phones on the coast or at sea may connect to a ship’s satellite-based service when land networks are unavailable, and that charges can differ from ordinary roaming. Read its mobile-abroad guidance before relying on your home line. Do not apply a land-roaming allowance to another network without confirmation.
Build a connection plan for each part of the trip
The following worksheet is a fictional planning example, not a route recommendation or a Portproof coverage statement. It separates the task from the connection so that an unresolved sea-day requirement is not hidden inside a country-plan purchase.
| Segment and task | Connection being considered | Evidence still required | Alternative to prepare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Port visit: maps and transport updates | A destination eSIM on a land network | That destination and network in the actual plan; allowance and start policy | Saved maps and booking details |
| Coastal sailing: check a time-sensitive message | An uncertain cellular connection | Which network would carry the connection and which line would be charged | A separately checked ship Wi-Fi option |
| Sea day: join a scheduled call | The ship’s internet service | Current package terms and whether that activity is supported | A plan to reschedule if the connection is unavailable |
For your own itinerary, add every country where you expect to use land data. Mark a requirement as unknown when you cannot identify a suitable network or product. Do not turn an unknown into “included” because the plan is described as regional. The multi-country eSIM worksheet covers the land-destination comparison.
Check every active line before leaving port
A travel data line can coexist with a home line that has different roaming terms. Choosing the eSIM for mobile data does not establish what the other line can do or cost. Review the selected data line, any automatic data-switching option, and the home provider’s call and messaging conditions.
- Identify each active cellular line and the provider responsible for its charges.
- Check the current device instructions for cellular, roaming and Wi-Fi controls; menu names depend on the device and software.
- Before sailing, decide whether you want any cellular connection or only a separately arranged Wi-Fi connection.
- If you need a particular onboard service, obtain its explicit network and charging terms rather than trying an unknown connection.
- Keep the plan and booking information available through a method that does not depend on the connection being tested.
An operator’s onboard service explanation illustrates that cellular-at-sea and ship Wi-Fi are separate choices. Check the operator for your actual sailing. This source is not evidence that a particular Portproof plan works on that ship.
Compare the shore-use plan on its own terms
Once the land-data requirement is clear, compare covered destinations, allowance, validity and activation policy in the eSIM catalogue. Check your device’s compatibility and unlock status before purchasing. Do not assume that installation, first network connection and the start of validity are the same event.
Budget the allowance for the activities assigned to that line. Saved maps may reduce the amount you need to download later, but they do not make all travel information work offline. Background updates and hotspot use can still consume mobile data. The data-usage guide explains how to compare the relevant readings and periods.
Use the existing plan when something is unclear
If a purchased plan has no working land data, first check the selected line, destination, remaining allowance and plan status. Keep the profile installed while investigating. Follow eSIM connection checks and contact support about the existing order before deleting a profile or buying another plan.
A failed connection at sea does not by itself establish a defective country plan. Record whether you were ashore or sailing and which connection you expected to use. Share order information privately; keep QR codes, activation details and device identifiers out of public screenshots.
Choose the product for the connection you can verify
Browse destination eSIM plans for the land visits you have checked. Arrange any required onboard connection separately under explicit terms. No maritime network test, speed comparison or plan purchase was performed for this guide; the worksheet and actions help you identify what still needs confirmation.
