Short answers
Should I delete and reinstall an eSIM that has no data?
Keep the profile while checking the connection. Apple advises against erasing an eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless the carrier directs it. Another download or replacement is not guaranteed. Check the existing plan and contact Portproof before removing its profile.
Should data roaming be on for a travel eSIM?
Follow the selected plan’s supplied instructions for that line. Some international plans need data roaming, but the same setting does not suit every plan. Check the home line separately because its carrier may charge for roaming.
Does a signal icon mean the eSIM has internet?
It shows network information, but it does not prove that a web request can complete through the intended line. Check the selected data SIM, current allowance and validity, then try one small page without external Wi-Fi or unintended data switching.
Find the point where the connection stops
Use this guide after installation, or when you are unsure whether the profile is present. For the download itself, use the QR and manual installation guide. Buying another plan does not diagnose the one you already own.
| Observation | Start here |
|---|---|
| No matching profile in the phone’s SIM settings | Check the existing order and delivered installation details. Do not assume payment means installation is ready. |
| Profile present, but another line supplies data | Select the intended mobile-data line and review automatic switching. |
| Intended line shows no service | Check coverage, plan state and device-specific network guidance. |
| A network indicator appears, but pages fail | Check allowance, validity, roaming and any supplied APN instructions. |
| Phone data works, but the laptop does not | Use the separate hotspot checks. |
Read the existing plan’s current information
Open My eSIMs, select the plan associated with your order and use Refresh status when a current reading is needed. Read the status, Checked time, reported end time and usage timestamp. A stale or unavailable usage reading does not establish that the allowance is empty.
Compare your destination with the plan’s actual covered-country list. A regional name, a routing location or a country visited earlier does not establish coverage at your present stop. A covered country still does not promise a signal at every address. Check the activation policy rather than calculating the start from the purchase time.
If the account is still preparing installation details, inspect the existing order. A successful payment is separate from completed provisioning. Keep its reference if you need support; do not create a second purchase to test whether the first worked.
Check which line actually carries the test
- Record the current Wi-Fi, selected mobile-data line and data-switching settings before changing anything.
- On iPhone, inspect Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data. On Pixel, inspect Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and the mobile-data selection. Choose the intended eSIM. Other manufacturers and software versions have different labels.
- Where offered, prevent automatic switching to another SIM for this short check. Avoid a call on the other line during it; call-related data behaviour can differ.
- Disconnect from external Wi-Fi briefly and load a small web page. Keep the test small and within the allowance. Note the result and time.
- Review your temporary changes afterwards. Restore the connectivity you intend to use without enabling a line or switching option you meant to avoid.
Google’s Pixel network instructions distinguish the default data SIM from call and text preferences. Apple’s travel eSIM guidance also separates the travel data line from the home line. Keeping that home line enabled can still incur its carrier’s charges.
If the intended line has no service
Confirm that the profile is enabled and the plan covers your destination and current dates. Recheck the exact phone model and lock state if those were never established. Device support and the plan’s current entitlement are separate checks.
Apple’s eSIM troubleshooting sequence includes Airplane Mode, turning the affected line off and on, restarting, and checking carrier settings. Follow the steps appropriate to your device, checking after each one. These are manufacturer diagnostics, not a promise that toggling a setting fixes every service problem.
If there is signal but no internet
Read the current allowance and validity first. If a recent reading confirms data is exhausted, inspect the owned plan’s available top-ups. Extra data is a separate purchase; it does not automatically extend the term. If allowance or expiry remains unknown, preserve that uncertainty before paying.
Next, check roaming on the intended line against its supplied instructions. Apple explains per-line roaming options. Do not apply a travel line’s settings to the home line without checking that carrier’s terms.
Change an APN only when the plan’s authorised instructions or support provide the correct values. Apple’s APN reference notes that editing may be unavailable and incorrect settings can interrupt data. A missing APN menu does not justify installing a configuration profile from an unrelated source.
Check whether a local data limit has turned mobile data off; the usage and data-control guide explains the distinction. If the phone now works and only a laptop fails, move to the hotspot guide rather than repeating installation.
Send a useful private support report
Contact Portproof support with the order reference, plan name, phone model, software version, destination, exact error, check time and the stage that failed. State whether the profile is present, which line supplied data and whether a small page loaded with external Wi-Fi disconnected. Those observations are more useful than “it does not work”.
Keep QR codes, activation codes, LPA details and API keys out of screenshots and messages. Do not erase a profile while waiting for help: Apple’s erasure guidance distinguishes removing a profile from cancelling a plan and warns that replacement needs provider involvement.
Sources and scope
Manufacturer references linked above and Portproof’s account flow were reviewed on 25 October 2026. Menu labels and available controls vary. These are documentation-based checks; no handset, network or paid-plan test, coverage guarantee or delivery-time guarantee is claimed.
What is not allowed
Use only plans and devices you are authorised to manage. Keep installation material private and follow the acceptable-use policy.
