Short answers
What do I need before installing an eSIM?
An eSIM-compatible device that can use the selected network, an unlocked device for a plan from another carrier, an internet connection and the delivered installation information. Check the exact device model and region rather than assuming every phone supports eSIM.
Can I install without scanning a QR code?
If manual information is supplied and your device supports that method, follow its manual-entry prompts. My eSIMs can show an SM-DP+ address, activation code or manual LPA information. Use the value requested by each field; these labels are not interchangeable.
When does the plan start?
Read that plan’s activation policy. Do not assume every plan starts on installation, or that every plan waits until you reach the destination. Coverage, allowance and validity belong to the selected plan.
Check the device and the plan first
Before buying, use the phone compatibility checklist to record the exact model, regional variant and carrier-lock result. A familiar phone name or an Add eSIM option alone does not confirm every requirement.
Start with the exact model’s eSIM support, its carrier-lock state and the plan’s coverage. Apple documents the lock check in the iPhone’s General, About settings. Follow your manufacturer’s current instructions for other devices; an unfamiliar menu is not a reason to buy another plan.
| Check | Continue when | If unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Device support | Your exact model and region support eSIM | Check the manufacturer’s model information |
| Carrier lock | The device can use the selected plan’s network | Ask the carrier that locked the device |
| Activation policy | You understand what starts validity | Read the plan details before installing |
| Installation status | The purchased plan has delivered its details | Open its existing order and refresh status |
| Internet connection | You have a working connection for setup | Restore connectivity before downloading the profile |
In the eSIM catalogue, check coverage, allowance, validity and reported features. Missing facts remain unknown; a country label does not guarantee coverage at every address.
Open the purchased plan’s installation details
- Sign in and open My eSIMs. Choose the plan belonging to the order you want to install.
- Check its status and the time it was last checked. Use Refresh status if current information is needed.
- When available, select Show installation details. Keep the revealed QR code and activation information private.
- Read the supplied fields before choosing QR or manual setup. Hide installation details when finished.
If installation information is missing, inspect the existing order and refresh status. Buying again can create a separate purchase. Contact support with the existing order if the original result remains unclear.
Choose QR or manual setup
| Situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| QR code available on another screen | Open the device’s add-eSIM flow and scan that code |
| Only the installing phone is available | Check supported same-device QR handling or use supplied manual details |
| Manual fields available | Match the supplied address and code to the device’s prompts |
| Neither method has delivered usable details | Refresh the existing plan and seek support |
| Profile already installed | Inspect that profile and its data-line setting before attempting another installation |
Match the supplied address, code or LPA value to the device’s requested field. Keep credentials out of public QR readers. Do not assume that deleting a profile allows another download.
iPhone: follow the supplied setup method
Apple documents scanning a supplied QR code with Camera, then following the cellular-plan prompts. For manual information, its route uses Settings, Cellular or Mobile Data, Add Cellular Plan, then Enter Details Manually. Follow the options on your version and the official iPhone setup instructions.
Pixel: add the eSIM through SIM settings
Google’s documented Pixel route is Settings, Network & internet, SIMs, Add SIM, then Set up an eSIM. Follow the onscreen prompts and the Pixel setup instructions. Other Android manufacturers use different menus; this is not a universal Android path.
Check which line supplies mobile data
Confirm that the intended profile is selected for mobile data and review the plan’s own activation instructions. Keeping another line enabled can incur that carrier’s charges. Apple’s travel eSIM reference explains these separate-line choices.
A downloaded profile is not proof that the data allowance is active or that carrier SMS is included. Use the data-only eSIM and SMS guide to check those differences. If you need a separate web-managed number, first compare SMS activation, rental and monthly terms.
Stop at the point that is unclear
- No add-eSIM option
- Recheck the exact device model, region and lock state with the manufacturer or carrier.
- QR will not scan
- Check that you are viewing the delivered plan’s code. Use supplied manual information if supported; do not generate a replacement profile.
| What you see | Next check |
|---|---|
| The profile is missing | Open the delivered installation information and the instructions for your device. An unclear installation is not a reason to buy again. |
| The profile is present but another line supplies data | Inspect the selected mobile-data line. Keeping a home line enabled can incur that carrier’s charges. |
| The intended line shows no service | Check the plan’s covered destination and current account status, then follow the manufacturer’s connection guidance. |
| A network indicator appears but a small web page does not load | Check the selected data line, current allowance and validity. Follow the plan’s supplied roaming and APN instructions; the indicator alone does not identify the cause. |
| The account reading is old or unavailable | Refresh the existing plan before concluding that its allowance is exhausted or its term has ended. Unavailable usage is unknown, not zero. |
If the current reading confirms that you need more data, use the eSIM top-up checklist to check the owned plan’s eligibility, review the add-on and resolve any pending request before paying again.
Apple’s eSIM troubleshooting and Google’s Pixel mobile-network settings describe device-specific checks. Menu labels and available controls vary. Use the selected plan’s requirements for roaming rather than assuming one setting suits every plan.

What is not allowed
Install only plans you are authorised to use. Keep activation material private and follow the acceptable-use policy.
