Short answers
Why does my phone show different usage from my eSIM plan?
The counters can cover different lines, periods or measurements. Check those details before comparing the numbers. The phone’s total is a useful planning input, but it is not a substitute for the plan’s current reported allowance. An old or unavailable plan reading remains uncertain.
Does resetting the phone’s counter restore data?
No. It changes the device statistics you see, not the purchased allowance or validity. Record useful readings before resetting them. Adding money to the Portproof wallet also does not add eSIM data; a supported top-up is a separate confirmed purchase.
Will a data warning stop the phone using data?
On supported Pixels, a warning notifies you; a configured data limit can turn mobile data off. They are different controls. A device limit follows its own counter and is not a guarantee against every charge or a promise that its reading matches the plan.
Keep the two readings in view
Open the existing plan in My eSIMs. Read Reported data usage, its Usage checked time, the current status and any reported end time. Use Refresh status when a current reading is needed. Plan details may still describe the original offer: its Allowance label is not a new measurement of remaining data.
| Reading | Record | What it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| Phone counter | Selected SIM, period, total and app breakdown | Which activity used mobile data on this device? |
| Owned plan usage | Remaining/used data when reported, plus usage timestamp | What does the latest plan reading say about the allowance? |
| Plan term | Activation rule, current status and reported end time | Is there still time to use any remaining data? |
| Device warning or limit | Threshold and the period it follows | Could a local control explain a notification or stopped connection? |
A blank reading does not mean zero usage or zero remaining data. An older reading may precede your latest session. If the numbers disagree after you align the line, period and units, keep both readings and ask Portproof support about the owned plan rather than inventing a corrected balance.
Measure one line over a known period
- Identify the eSIM used for mobile data. With more than one SIM, do not combine another line’s counter with this plan’s allowance.
- Record the start time, selected line, counter value and displayed unit. Check the counter’s period; a current-period total is not necessarily the trip total.
- Use the connection for a small, representative task. Note relevant background activity and any laptop sharing. Avoid buying data or changing plans merely to run a measurement.
- Record the end time and counter again. Subtract the start value from the end value only when both belong to the same counter and unit.
- Compare with a later plan reading when available, keeping its timestamp. Do not expect an instant, exact match or treat the difference alone as evidence of an incorrect charge.
Fictional example: a device counter rises from 1.20 GB to 1.35 GB during one session. The measured change is 0.15 GB. That can include the phone’s background work; it is not automatically the consumption of the foreground app or a connected laptop. These are invented readings, not a plan or benchmark.
Resolve differing units or periods before subtracting readings. For future trip estimates, the eSIM data calculator separates your measured use, additional work and chosen headroom.
iPhone: inspect apps and Low Data Mode
Apple’s cellular-usage instructions explain the app breakdown in Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data, the selected line with Dual SIM, and Reset Statistics. Review the period before interpreting a total. Save a useful reading before resetting it.
You can turn cellular access off for an app when you want it to use Wi-Fi instead. Decide which apps need mobile access on the trip before changing them; a restriction can explain why that app stops updating while other apps still connect. Keep essential travel information available offline where practical.
Apple’s Low Data Mode guide describes separate cellular and Wi-Fi settings. On supported configurations, inspect the intended line’s data options; labels differ between LTE/4G, 5G and Dual SIM. The mode reduces some background activity, downloads and media behaviour. It is not a fixed saving or a guarantee of no background use.
Pixel: distinguish a warning from a limit
Google’s Pixel data-usage guide uses Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, then App data usage for the period and app breakdown. Other Android manufacturers can use different menus. Follow the instructions for the device you own.
Under Data warning & limit, a warning sends a notification at the chosen threshold. A configured limit can switch mobile data off. If the connection stops near a threshold, check this control before assuming the eSIM has expired. Review the plan’s current reading before increasing or removing a limit; restoring connectivity can allow further use.
Review the work that runs without attention
- Inspect queued downloads, app updates, media quality and cloud uploads before a mobile session. Move optional large work to a suitable connection when practical.
- Include laptop sharing in the measurement. If it is already in your sample, do not count the same traffic again as extra trip data. The hotspot guide separates phone and laptop checks.
- Review temporary restrictions after the task. A saved restriction can explain missing updates later, while turning it off can restart queued work.
- Check the selected data line after changing SIM settings. Keeping another line enabled can still incur that carrier’s charges; Portproof cannot control its terms.
Choose the next step from the confirmed result
If recent plan information confirms depleted data, inspect top-up eligibility and current options. Read the new allowance, term and charge before confirming. Top-up support does not guarantee an offer is available, and extra data does not automatically extend the original expiry.
If data and time remain but the phone cannot connect, use the post-install connection checks. If a previous top-up is pending or unknown, inspect that existing request before purchasing another. Wallet funding, a submitted request and completed delivery are separate events.

The linked Apple and Google references and Portproof usage fields were checked on 25 October 2026. This guide explains measurement and device controls; it does not report a handset test, benchmark, typical consumption rate or guaranteed saving. Plan facts and current catalogue options remain separate from the worksheet.
