Can a data-only eSIM receive SMS?

A data-only plan provides internet access without an included carrier SMS service. An eSIM is the SIM format, so another eSIM plan may include different capabilities. Read the selected plan’s facts and keep carrier SMS, internet messaging and a separately purchased SMS inbox distinct.

Short answers

Will a data-only eSIM receive verification texts?

Do not rely on a data-only plan for carrier SMS. Receiving a verification text requires a suitable number and supporting service, and the sender must accept that number. Internet access alone does not provide that entitlement.

Does every eSIM have a phone number?

No phone-number capability should be assumed from the eSIM label. Check the plan’s stated call and SMS support, allowances and number information. Missing fields do not confirm support.

Can messaging apps still work over data?

Apps that communicate over an internet connection can use mobile data when their own requirements are met. That does not mean carrier SMS is working. An app’s account registration or recovery may still depend on a separate number.

Is a Portproof SMS number attached to my eSIM?

A separately bought SMS service is managed through My numbers, with its own country, supported service and term. Buying it does not automatically add voice or SMS to an eSIM profile or forward messages into the phone’s SMS app.

Separate the SIM format from the plan

The eSIM label describes how the profile is supplied, not every included service. Read the plan’s allowance, validity, coverage and optional capabilities before choosing it for a messaging task.

The eSIM catalogue shows reported SMS and call support, allowances and activation policy. A number prefix alone does not establish an SMS entitlement. Missing fields mean support has not been reported. Delivered-plan details are in My eSIMs.

A working messenger does not prove SMS support

Apple distinguishes iMessage over Wi-Fi or cellular data from carrier-provided SMS, which requires a supporting messaging plan. Its message-type reference also distinguishes RCS. Do not classify every message by whether an internet connection happens to be available, or treat every green bubble as SMS.

Check how the message is delivered. A configured app conversation differs from a fresh text sent to a telephone number. The app can still impose separate registration or recovery requirements.

Using one line for data and another for texts

On supported devices, the line selected for mobile data can differ from the line used for calls or texts. Google documents separate defaults in its Pixel dual-SIM instructions. Device, carrier and software conditions apply; other Android menus vary.

Keeping a home line enabled does not make its service free. Confirm its roaming and messaging conditions with that carrier before relying on it abroad. Avoid changing multiple settings at once: identify the data line, the intended receiving number and the plan that actually supports that number.

For profile setup rather than messaging entitlements, use the QR and manual eSIM installation guide. Device instructions follow manufacturer references checked on 21 October 2026; menus can vary.

A web-managed SMS number is a separate purchase

Portproof’s SMS catalogue separates one-time activation, service-specific rentals and monthly number plans. These are incoming-message services with their own details and expiry. They do not install an eSIM, replace the data plan or make its phone interface send SMS.

  1. Check the listed country, service scope and term before choosing a number.
  2. After confirmed delivery, open My numbers and select that service.
  3. Read its current status and last-checked time. Use Refresh status & messages when you need a new check.
  4. Read any available message or code in that inbox. An empty inbox, a failed read and unavailable message content are different states.

Do not assume a separately purchased number will receive every sender’s messages. The receiving service controls acceptance and use conditions. The SMS type guide explains why a short-lived activation and a number held for a paid term are different choices.

Before relying on either service

  • Identify which number the sender is addressing and where its messages should appear.
  • Check that number’s service scope, current status and reported end time.
  • For a device plan, verify reported SMS support rather than inferring it from data connectivity.
  • For important accounts, use the account service’s permitted authentication and recovery methods; do not treat a temporary number as permanent access.
  • Keep credentials, installation information and received codes out of public screenshots.

Check an unconfirmed purchase through its existing order before buying again. A working data connection, installed profile and successful SMS delivery are separate outcomes. Current availability is shown in the catalogue.

What is not allowed

Use messaging and account services only for accounts you own or are authorised to manage, where the receiving service allows it. Follow the acceptable-use policy.
